Ashira Malka was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, but moved to Israel at a very young age. “Poetry for me,” she says, “is just all that’s left when the rest of life falls away. It’s the essence that runs thorough everything.” Ashira speaks both English and Hebrew. She has honored us by submitting audio poetry in both languages:

“I was born, so I’m told, in Cincinnati but my first memories are in Israel and as far as I’m concerned the first couple years of my life previous to that are only hear-say. I’m not willing to hand over my own experience for the sake of trust in any one’s version of events but my own. I speak Hebrew and English but can pronounce and memorize long songs and prayers in pretty much any language, given the opportunity.” Some of Ashira’s feelings about Israel are displayed in her work “Life Fall” in Hebrew:

She says poetry and spoken word poetry has become a great way to connect to people. “My other favorite activities are food in all forms — growing, foraging, finding, forming — and going into debt for a good bottle of olive oil.”
