Newspaper Poetry: Pleading with an Industry "You will soon see newspaper listings on EWR. We have 2 reasons for this. First we are pleading with all newspapers, major dailies and otherwise to begin to print poetry." Second, newspapers in this country are not at their pinnacle when it comes to sales and even reader interest. Many people believe the industry is dying. When you look at the problems faced by US newspapers it's obvious that they need to respond by changing their format and writing. For over 200 years American newspapers have been written the same way (intervened pyramid). It is no wonder why this inflexible industry has found itself in deep trouble. They seem single minded for their own destruction. We feel for our colleagues who have lost their jobs due to cutbacks at major daily newspapers. We hope our readers will understand that this is not an attack on newspapers. It is especially not an attack on journalists who we believe are some of the most talented writers anywhere. We believe that US newspapers have missed many opportunities over the last decade in assuring their place on the American business landscape. Almost every major newspaper out there was in contention for great success. When you look at many online news outlets who are prospering or even classified ad sites who have stormed the country even the world, newspapers were there on the web before these competitors. It was their single-mindedness for the past that has handicapped them. On the other side you have American poets. They do not get enough respect, and they most certainly do not make enough money at their craft. We are asking that US newspapers, ALL US papers begin to treat our artists and their readers with more respect. Many thriving magazines and publications like the Atlantic Monthly already follow a format that allows them to include poetry. Including poetry in newspapers on a regular basis would help both poets and the news industry. We believe it will increase depth of readership and even circulation. When the quality of writing in newspapers becomes exponentially better than what is found on the web, people will begin to return to a paper news source. A respect for art and culture is key. People can find all the news online anytime, they cannot always find quality. Poets could do a large part for drawing a readership to newspapers. The higher quality of writing would show more respect to the readers and deepen the understanding of the public. It may seem counter intuitive, but we believe by deepening the content many ex-readers will return with a higher respect for publications that right now are thought only to be pages of ambulance chasers writing on an 8th grade level. We know the journalists in the industry are much better than what they have gotten credit for. It is time to break from tradition and let those talented people create a new way of looking at news and culture in our country. Our readers will begin to see listings for US newspapers on our site. Please visit those papers and ask them to start publishing poetry. Also, please sign our online petition at:
