The Amazon Kindle 2
The Salt Lake Tribune has a very interesting article: “Is Kindle the right device to put books behind us?” It’s a very good article, please read it.
It does speak to these two groups that are arising out of the ebook or bound book. First I always think it is amazing how many people read books. It’s like a little bit of work, but as of late I’ve just see very one reading. This isn’t you know scienctific or anything, but it seems like far more people are reading now than when I grew up in the 80s and 90s. Maybe my groups have just changed, but a lot of people are reading.
This brings me to the first point about the Kindle. I think it is a great thing to have gadget to get people reading. The second thing is, and I know I’ll take heat on this, but I think it’s where we are headed. It’s much Greener in the long run, cheaper, and of course easier to carry. One book isn’t a big deal, but when I was in my masters program lugging around a ton of books, I would have liked to have a little screen to carry instead.
Anyway, on the message boards, I thought a fist fight was going to break out over this topic, and I really don’t see the big deal. I think we are going to have bound books for a good long time, so why get all upset now. Someday they may be hard to come by, but look at LPs they are all gone, and we got over that. Post what you think, but I could live without bound books.
