One of, if not my all time, favorite list on EWR is our Top 50 Literary Magazines List. It brings a ton of traffic, which is always a plus, but I like the idea that we were the first site to do this. You see copies of the list all over the web. Even Esquire magazine did a list like this. Take a look at the list.
At the time when I did this list there were 1000s of literary magazines out there and no real opinion on what the best ones were. For many writers, I don’t think they understood that you could publish with a 1000s small magazines, and it wouldn’t bring you the same type of recoignition that you can get from publishing with a top literary magazine. It’s true. Many experienced writers already knew the best or at least the better magazines to be published in, but if you just started writing, you wouldn’t have a clue. This list isn’t perfect, but it represents something that I think is important. I don’t like the fact that some magazines are better than others. I’m not crazy about that idea, but it is a reality. Not all magazines were created equal.
I built the list on a couple of factors. I looked at how often they were recognized by national anthologies. I actually went out and looked at several different anthologies. Only Best American Poetry and Best American Short Stories show up on the site, but I looked at Norton, and a few other series. I counted each time these magazines appeared in these anthologies. I figured the more they were picked by editors for these anthologies (mostly rotating guest editors) the more people would agree. I also looked at the age of the magazine, who publishes it and who is published in it. It’s not perfect, but the list took me a very long time to compile. It wasn’t an overnight thing. I think it took over a year to get it all together.
I get a ton of email about the list. Some agree, some disagree, but I still think it represents the idea that some magazines are different that others a concept not all writers start out with.
