Drive-ins are dying. If you haven’t gone to your local drive in in a while, go! If you have kids a drive in is a great place for taking the family. You can sit outside, you can have fun. I go to the drive-in about 5 times every summer. I’d liked to go more often, but it’s not always easy to find the time.
If you go, support the drive-in. A couple really good reasons to go. First they are far less expensive than a movie theater. If you go to a drive-in you’ll pay about 15 a car load. If I go with my family, of 5 to the movie theater I pay about 35$ just to get in. If I buy drinks and popcorn you’re looking at another 12-30. I can easily walk out of a movie theater spending around $70. At the drive-in I’ve never spent over 30. I like to buy something from the concessions because they honestly need the money. If you check the links below you’ll get some stats on drive-ins. According to drive-ins.com at the peak of drive-ins in the US there were over 4000 drive-ins. Now there are fewer than 500.
Another great reason to go is to GET OUTSIDE. I know that most of us believe if the night-time air hits our skin we will burst into flames, but it is simply not true. I know a lot of very athletic people that never really go outside. They go to the gym, they drive in a car, and they work inside. Exposure to night time air is minimal. Don’t let this be you!
Another reason to go to the drive-in is that you get two movies! I love this. You get one movie, some dancing hot dogs and popcorn, and boom a second movie! My kids fall asleep for the second film most of the time, so if you find one running a kid’s movie first and then an film more for adults (NOT an adult film) go. They’ll sleep and you might get through an entire movie without having to hit the pause button.
Lastly, most of us have at least one fond memory of a drive in. I used to go all the time when I was kid. It would be a shame if they all disappear. If you haven’t been to one, and you think it doesn’t matter, go one time. You’ll see what I’m talking about. It is a much different experience watching a movie at a drive-in rather than at a movie theater.
I’ve always thought going to a movie should be an event. Most of the time now, going to the movie theater is like going to a Super K-Mart. The experience just doesn’t seem to be an event. If you pack up the car, bring a small cooler, some chairs, a blanket, and a bunch of friends, you’ll have an event. I think that’s why movies were made in the first place, but maybe that’s just me.
