10 Words Editors Hate
If you use these words in your poetry or writing, be very careful. They are so charged as an editor I’ve stopped reading because of them. They can of course be used in a way that are not cliché, but many times just the sight of them can send your work into the DO NOT PUBLISH pile. I’m not really saying to avoid these words. It’s really up to you, but they do send editors running. Be aware.
1. Soul-this word is number 1 for a reason. Many editors simply hate it.
2. Heart- this word also can get a manuscript rejected quickly!
3. Love-ugh, so many other ways to say this one.
4. Warmth-tread lightly here. Nine times out of 10 this one will get you rejected.
5. Windows-oddly, more times than not this one is used in a cliché way. Windows to the soul…
6. Forever-don’t use it.
7. Death-ok to write about, not great to say.
8. Life-see above
9. Feeling- talk all you want to about them, just don’t say the word.
10. Light- do not use.
Wow. Thanks for the heads up. I will be fine combing my manuscript for any of these words where they are unnecessary, although I am pretty sure they aren’t in there. Phew!

That’s great for 80% of the MSs out there. I, however, write paranormal erotic romance. With ANGELS. Based on this list, I have no business even trying to pawn myself off as an author on the unsuspecting reader.

You can’t really write an epic fantasy novel without using half of these? Haha. The EDITOR who wrote this article is way too strict. This would apply MAYBE if you were wanting to publish a cook book. Haha. And some of it it understandable. But LIFE and DEATH are two of the most questioned phenomenons by the human race. Bleh. They’re amazing subjects.
This is very bad advice. While much bad poetry surely includes many of these words, these words are not what make the poetry/writing bad, and avoiding them does not make what you write good.
Being rejected by an editor simply for using any of these words means that you have been spared working with a bad editor.
Interesting point: These 10 words appear nearly 1,000 times (!) in Shakespeare’s collected poems.

Surely context is all here? I realise all of these words have the potential to be used in a butt-clenchingly trite way, but that doesn’t make them ‘bad words’ – quite the opposite. Most of them can’t be replaced all that easily either – that’s why they exist!
Regina Spektor refers to stars (presumably an also-ran for the list?) as ‘just old light’. One of the simplest and most gorgeous examples of poetry I know.
I’d add “journey” and “whimsical” and “shrugged” to that list.
