At Great Ape Literary Journal, we love to laugh, especially at ourselves. Robert A. Heinlein once wrote that laughter is humanity\u2019s natural reaction to pain, and times are certainly painful. The rainforests are burning, the icecaps are melting, and all the while, the fake news blues are running rampant. But never fear, dear friend, for Great Ape has arrived with a cure-all tonic for these troublesome times!<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s face it. We, as a species, are buffoons. We are loud and proud in announcing our greatness, and yet we are not great enough to fix any of the problems we are causing. We are tragic and comic in equal proportions. We are both annoyingly intelligent and monumentously stupid. We are firmly in support of personal property, and yet we are constantly stealing from each other. We are original, but we contain multitudes.<\/p>\n

Great Ape is a celebration of all our contradictions, all our idiosyncrasies. Send us pieces of prose, poetry, or graphic fiction that parody the self-aggrandizement of mankind. We provide edits on all submissions, whether accepted for publication or not, so send us your laundry, your fluff, your I-don\u2019t-know-about-this-one. We want to laugh, and so, we presume, do you. Help us make that happen. Share our call with your students, your friends, that one lady on the bus who always looks at you funny. Submit to Great Ape and get published!<\/p>\n

Submissions<\/span><\/p>\n

Write something funny. Anything that makes us laugh goes to the top of the accepted pile. Hint: If reading it doesn\u2019t make you at least smeyes, chances are that we are not interested in publishing it.<\/p>\n

We are dedicated to empowering you, the writer. The ethos of Great Ape is simply DO YOU. However, as writers, we know that freedom can be as hostile to the imagination as manacles are to the hands, so here are some things we like and dislike:<\/p>\n

We Like\u2026
\npuns; pithy jokes; dirty jokes; baths; clean jokes; satire; dark humor; levity, brevity, gravity, surprises; wordplay; surrealism; animals that can talk; animals that can\u2019t talk; animals that can talk but choose not to; EVERYTHING that takes the ridiculousness of human existence as its central theme<\/p>\n

We Dislike\u2026
\nbad grammar; \u201cyour way\u201d of using punctuation; misuse of the word irony; broken records; worn-out metaphors; ANY and EVERY joke, poem, or story that takes it as a given that one group of people are fundamentally better or worse than any other group of people (i.e. racism, sexism, classism, and all the other terrible -isms out there)<\/p>\n

We accept poetry and prose, both fiction and creative nonfiction. We also accept illustrated work, i.e. comics. Prose should be no longer than 4000 words, double spaced, with your name and the name of the piece in the header. Poetry can be in any form, format, or length, but please clearly indicate your name and the name of the poem in the submission email.<\/p>\n

Submit your work as a PDF or .docx file to submissions@great-ape.com. We accept submissions year-round and we provide feedback on all submissions, whether accepted or not.<\/p>\n
