\"\"Fictive Dream, established in May 2016, is an English language online literary magazine dedicated to the short story. It is a well-respected outlet for short story writers from all over the world including the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand. We chose our name with more than just a backward glance to American writer and teacher John Gardner whose concept of the fictive dream requires that readers never slip out of the fictional world or dream that a writer creates. For us this remains a cornerstone of excellent writing, the sort of writing that we\u2019re looking to promote.<\/p>\n

Fictive Dream publishes two stories per week. We aim to keep our editorial standard consistently high. We form good relationships with our authors and have a high rate of authors sending us subsequent stories. We respond within a month and if we really want a story, then much more quickly than that.<\/p>\n

We chose our name with more than just a backward glance to American writer and teacher John Gardner whose concept of the fictive dream remains a cornerstone of good writing. Powerful writing ensures that readers never slip out of the fictional world or dream that a writer creates. This is the sort of writing we\u2019re looking to promote here at\u00a0Fictive Dream<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Submissions<\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of submissions we’re open to all subjects and we’re particularly interested in stories that give an insight into the human condition, that is, the problems, the complexities, and the positive experiences that all people face at one time or another. Stories may be challenging, uplifting, dramatic, playful, exhilarating or cryptic. We have a preference for a contemporary voice and naturally, we’re always attracted by originality. However, our essential criteria is that a story be compelling and well crafted.<\/p>\n

We publish stories of between 500 and 2,500 words that have not been previously published (including an author’s own blog or social media). Submission is by email only to fictivedream@gmail.com. There are no reading fees and we are not a fee paying publication. We do, however, nominate stories for national and international awards such as the Pushcart Prize, Best of the Net and Best Small Fictions. We understand that authors have their strengths and weakness. Therefore, we sometimes collaborate with them by providing editorial guidance where we feel it’s necessary. This is suggested at an early stage and changes are never made without an author’s agreement.<\/p>\n

We are open for submissions through out the year. We accept simultaneous submissions.<\/p>\n

We publish stories<\/strong>\u00a0of between 500 and 2,500 words that have not previously appeared elsewhere, either in print or online (including your own blog and social media).<\/p>\n

Submit your story as a Word attachment to fictivedream@gmail.com. No PDFs and please do not paste your story in the body of your email. We\u2019ll get back to you within three weeks of submission.<\/p>\n

Present your submission in a simple typeface with double spacing, numbered pages, the title of your story and your name.<\/p>\n

Upcoming<\/span><\/p>\n

Each year we run Flash Fiction February in which we commit to publishing a new piece of flash fiction on every day of the month. For the next event in February 2021, the submissions window for this will open in the fall of this year.<\/p>\n
