From the Editor<\/h3>\n
The Ekphrastic Review is an online journal devoted entirely to writing inspired by visual art. Our objective is to promote ekphrastic writing, promote art appreciation, and experience how the two strengthen each other and bring enrichment to every facet of life. We want to inspire more ekphrastic writing and promote the best in ekphrasis far and wide. We were founded in 2015 and have grown into a worldwide creative community. We publish ekphrastic fiction, flash fiction, microfiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and ekphrastic translations. We believe that contemplating art and writing about it or from it is the best way to learn about art history and an amazing way to expand our storytelling and poetry practice. We are interested in the history of ekphrasis and its early nature as a description of visual art, but hope we have helped to broaden and expand the definition and practice of ekphrasis: in the current era, where image reproduction is ubiquitous, ekphrasis must not be limited to a verbal depiction and need not be tethered to the artwork at all. We consider any work inspired by art. While we love all of the arts, from dance to music to cinema, our niche focus is on works inspired by visual art. Our publication offers many opportunities for creative expansion, art education, and community connection. We have a wide variety of workshops on art history and on different aspects of writing. We collaborate with colleagues in many different ways, including working with educators and publishing special showcases of work from their classes or institution. We have contests, bimonthly challenges, and are currently working to produce our first paperback anthology. We have a bookshelf to share and promote ekphrastic books as well as other books by our esteemed contributors. We have a vast archive of ekphrastic literature from all over the world. We nominate annually for Best of the Net, the Pushcart Prize, Best Microfiction, and Best Small Fictions.<\/p>\n
Submissions<\/h3>\n
We consider ekphrastic poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. All submissions must be inspired by visual art in some way, whether it is literally about the artwork or the artist, or was the launching pad for memory or imagination. We are eager to expand our short fiction archive and love short stories and very short stories, and we have a special love for prose poetry. We seldom consider experimentally spaced poetry, due to the frustrating limitations of the web. We love a wide variety of interesting works inspired by a diverse range of artworks, from all eras, styles, and cultures. We receive submissions quarterly so always check our guidelines page for the schedule and for updated details on submissions. We are actively seeking ekphrastic translations to publish with the work in original tongues as well. We welcome a diverse range of styles, voices, insights, and ideas. We consider and publish a range of lengths for all genres but have a strong preference for shorter forms and nothing is “too short.”<\/p>\n
Upcoming<\/h3>\n
In our ekphrastic challenges section, we have a new challenge prompt every other week, and invite submissions on that artwork. The work is chosen by our editorial team or guest editors. Writers have two weeks to submit a poem or story inspired by that work, and selected responses are published a week after deadline.<\/p>\n
