“All of writing is a huge lake. There are great rivers that feed the lake, like Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky. And then there are mere trickles, like Jean Rhys. All that matters is feeding the lake. I don’t matter. The lake matters. You must keep feeding the lake.\u201d Jean Rhys Inspired by Jean Rhys\u2019 imperative, The Lake is dedicated to publishing all forms of poetry by new and established poets, highlighting the best of contemporary poetry and reviewing the best of the new books. Since the initial issue in August 2013, The Lake has gone from strength to strength with over 6K hits a month, gaining worldwide readership by publishing the best in contemporary poetry, including traditional forms, free verse, long poems, short poems, and insightful reviews of the best new books. In addition to the regular review section, the One Poem Review feature will allow more poets’ to reach a wider audience – one poem featured from a new book\/pamphlet along with a cover JPG and a link to the publisher’s website.<\/p>\n

Submissions<\/h3>\n

I look for poems rooted in the everyday, in the observed reality that engenders how we feel about people and the things around us, with imagery we can all relate to. It would perhaps be easier for me to state what I don’t like in a poem. I don’t like surreal, abstract poems that wander on an on, e.g. “My soul floats in a black void of nothingness…” etc, etc. There’s more implicit connective emotion in Williams’ wheelbarrow than in lines and lines of abstract poetry. I’ll also consider classical forms, e.g. sonnets, sestinas, etc as well as free verse and prose poems. Unlike many journals, The Lake accepts previously published poems and simultaneous submissions.<\/p>\n
