From the Editor<\/h2>\n
New Latin for \u201cthe brain,\u201d Encephalon is a youth-led art and literary journal. We are devoted to honoring the voice, craft, and originality of aspiring writers, artists, and scientists. With stories just a synapse away, we hope to be the epicenter of diversity and encapsulate unique perspectives from new angles. Established in 2023, the reputation of Encephalon Journal arises from its place as a home for the intersection of neuroscience-based work and other academic disciplines. Originally, Encephalon began as a science-focused publication to foster underrepresented platforms. Now, we have decided to widen our horizons to accommodate the larger literary community. Nevertheless, the core of our magazine remains the same. Encephalon constantly strives to preserve and promote the voices of creatives from all backgrounds. Our award-winning editors review submissions from over 50 countries. Their voice-driven pieces ultimately create vibrant issues that attract more than 20,000 readers worldwide. In addition, Encephalon strives to combat “neurophobia” and raise mental health awareness by fostering inclusive and convenient conversations for a diverse audience. With a team-based approach towards multidisciplinary publication, there is something here for everyone to enjoy. Regardless of age or background, Encephalon publishes original fiction, non-fiction, poetry, essays up to 3,000 words, and all forms of visual art. However, we also welcome experimental and hybrid submissions. We look for \u2014 in no particular order \u2014 voice, clarity, and emotion. We do not focus on submissions that present an explicit meaning; however, we do look for narratives that provide a raw yet unparalleled point of view. Encephalon prioritizes work that focuses on workings of the brain and mental health. We are especially excited by pieces that are in conversation with the audience through emotional trajectory. We publish quarterly and host contests with no submission fees. Issues will always be available for free online, published both on our website and as a digital magazine via Issuu.<\/p>\n
Submissions<\/h3>\n
For writing, we are open to genres that include fiction, non-fiction, poetry, essays, journalism, interviews, and book reviews. We also welcome all forms of visual art, which include painting, illustration, collage, drawing, photography, and mixed media. With that being said, we also encourage and accompany hybrid submissions. The only thing we ask is that you send us your best work! While Encephalon is a mental health and neuroscience-based literary journal, we generally look for submissions that deliver a fresh and unique perspective. Voice is the most important dynamic force for our editors. We look for something that approaches an ordinary subject from a new angle, provides a self-created structure, or explores a mixture of language. We truly appreciate submissions that have gone through several revisions. Even if not explicitly stated, the dedication shines through. As for submissions that we are usually quick to disregard pieces that do not follow our guidelines or overdo the sentiments previously mentioned. We cherish balance and work that has carefully been guided in the right direction.<\/p>\n
