From the Editor<\/h2>\n

We hope to read your very best – and more than that we’re excited to read it, and we want more, we hope for more, we quietly plead for\/demand more. We love great literature, we love finding new voices and reading wonderful works from more established writers. We always put samples of some of favorites from past issues on our homepage – looking at those or reading the journal are the best ways, of course, to get a sense of our taste.<\/p>\n

Submissions should be previously unpublished; simultaneous submissions are fine; we publish Prism annually each spring and (generally) read year-round; each fall we run a short story and poetry contest; we’re charging a two dollar fee these days so that we can do something we hope all agree is a good thing: pay all our authors (at least $50 per writer).<\/p>\n

Submissions<\/h2>\n

We crush on poetry of many variations – poetry that is witty and poetry that is moving, poetry engaged in the world and poetry that couldn’t care less; poetry from ironic authors and from those poets who paint strange, beautiful, and exquisite shadow-boxes. Stretch yourself – stretch us. It’s true that we’re a little suspicious of end-rhyme but hey, we’re cool, we’ll hang. Mark Strand, Nate Hoks, and Brenda Hillman are among the many poets we adore.<\/p>\n

And, too, we love prose of many stripes – to give you a sense of what gets our hearts especially a-thumping, we’re very much moved by the urgency of Maggie Nelson and the sobering strangeness of Lucy Corin, by the ethereality of Lydia Davis and the ruminations of Peter Orner.<\/p>\n

\nPoetry:
\nSubmit: 1-4 poems, 10 pages maximum
\nJudge: Jen Hofer, poet, translator, book-maker, activist interpreter, educator, and urban cyclist. Hofer\u2019s translation of Mexican poet Myriam Moscona\u2019s Negro Marfil\/Ivory Black (2011) received the 2012 Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets and the 2012 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. Other works include a translation of Dolores Dorantes\u2019s sexoPUROsexoVELOZ and Septiembre (2008); lip wolf, a translation of lobo de labio by Laura Sol\u00f3rzano (2007), one (2009) and The Route (2008), a collaboration with Patrick Durgin.
\nFiction:
\nLength: up to 7,000 words; one full story or up to three linked microstories per submission
\nJudge: Sean Bernard, journal editor, whose first novel, Studies in the Hereafter, will be released by Red Hen Press in summer 2015 and whose collection Desert sonorous won the 2014 Juniper Prize and is forthcoming in February from UMass Press. His chapbook, Nuclear, is out from CutBank Books, and he\u2019s won artist-grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, the University of Arizona Poetry Center, and Poets & Writers.<\/p>\n
