From the Editor<\/h2>\n

[empath] was founded in December 2013 by high school student Jenny Jung. Funded largely by the prize money won in Sierra Nevada College\u2019s 4th annual writing competition, the quarterly\u2019s main focus is to promote humanitarian causes through the arts. We are mainly a non-profit organization that acts like a bolster for the campaigns of other bigger organizations. 3\/4 of the sales that [empath] makes go towards charities focusing on the assistance of teen parents, while the remaining 1\/4 go towards the production of the next volume.<\/p>\n

For the first issue, the magazine has received fifty-three submissions of writing for consideration, and is now branching into art and music for the second volume. The first volume has also featured the seasoned voices of Roxane Gay, Peter Laberge, Eric Boyd, Maggie Royer, and more.<\/p>\n

We publish the heart-quenching, humane works of writers, playwrights, musicians, visual artists, and academics from various backgrounds and ages. [empath] searches for the quietly dented, slightly chipped soul of humanity that slinks within all of us. We focus on compassion, and the concept of togetherness\/unity\/one. We focus on the good, the bad, the ordinariness of humanity. In short, we focus on empathy.<\/p>\n

Submissions<\/h2>\n

We are looking for subtle works with a strong element of humanity woven into the framework. Be it the worst side of humanity; the best; the most mundane and petty, as long as it is something recognizably human, [empath] will take it.<\/p>\n

[empath] prefers not to accept works with heavy erotica or graphic violence, nor will we accept works that are disturbing for the sake of shock value. Swear words and mentions of sex are all right.<\/p>\n
