Half of them,<br \/>\nchildren. So many<br \/>\nchildren. One killed every<br \/>\nten minutes, the headline<br \/>\nreads. The post below it\u2014a<br \/>\njoke about the inconvenience<br \/>\nof the end of Daylight Savings.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dawg it feel like it\u2019s 14pm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I laugh and then wonder how<br \/>\nsuch a thing is possible\u2014<br \/>\nhow can any human being laugh<br \/>\nnow, or ever again?<br \/>\nI am stressed about jury duty<br \/>\nand the Santa Ana winds making<br \/>\nmy eyes burn and the dog-sitting<br \/>\nI shouldn\u2019t have agreed to and<br \/>\nthe school closure on Veterans Day<br \/>\nwhen I have to work at my job,<br \/>\nspending hours on Zoom calls<br \/>\nabout how to better sell<br \/>\nexpensive beauty products<br \/>\nto women who feel inadequate<br \/>\nwithout them.<\/p>\n<p>How ridiculous that I am<br \/>\ncapable of stress when there are<br \/>\nno airstrikes here, no bombs<br \/>\ndropping like meteors from the sky,<br \/>\nwhen I have food and water<br \/>\nand shelter and the basic<br \/>\nassurance that my daughter<br \/>\nand I will be alive tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>How ridiculous that I am<br \/>\ncapable of brushing my teeth<br \/>\nand taking my vitamins and<br \/>\nbookmarking pad thai recipes<br \/>\nwithout sobbing about<br \/>\nthe chubby baby arms<br \/>\nsticking out of rubble.<\/p>\n<p>How ridiculous that I am,<br \/>\nwhen so many are not.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, we will watch<br \/>\nFancy Nancy and lick popsicles<br \/>\nand I will tell her a bedtime<br \/>\nstory about unicorns and<br \/>\nmagic and think about<br \/>\nall those children, so many<br \/>\nchildren, who will never believe<br \/>\nin unicorns or magic<br \/>\nbecause even if they live,<br \/>\nthey\u2019ve seen too much<br \/>\nto believe in anything.<\/p>\n<p>I will let my daughter sleep<br \/>\nwith me and she will pull<br \/>\nall the sheets to her side and<br \/>\nI will wake up cold, perturbed.<br \/>\nHow ridiculous that I am<br \/>\nanything but overjoyed to<br \/>\nwatch her sleeping face,<br \/>\nmouth open, eyelashes fluttering.<br \/>\nHow ridiculous that I am<br \/>\nanything less than grateful<br \/>\nfor the warmth of her body,<br \/>\nthe smell of her hair\u2014fruity<br \/>\nfrom the detangler spray.<\/p>\n<p>How ridiculous that I am,<br \/>\nwhen so many are not.<\/p>\n<p>###<\/p>\n<p>Kim Hooper is the author of six novels, including\u00a0<i>People Who Knew Me<\/i>, which was adapted into an episodic podcast from BBC Sounds.
