Remember<\/h1>\n

Despite a notice in the paper
\nRequesting contributions
\nIn lieu of flowers,
\nThey continued to arrive,
\nLike uninvited guests,
\nThe buds of bereavement
\nThe petals of sorrow,
\nA lush memorial of
\nStately peace lilies with stylish fronds,
\nThorny bushes of miniature roses,
\nDaffodils like prissy schoolgirls,
\nThe flimsy pots swaddled
\nIn crinkly green foil,
\nThe senders identified by
\nBrief notes of consolation
\nClipped to plastic stakes
\nPressed firmly in the soil.<\/p>\n

At the first heady rush
\nOf temperate weather,
\nHe planted them in his garden,
\nThe roses beside the mailbox
\nThe daffodils in the rear,
\nEncircling the massive oak
\nWhich towered above the deck,
\nAnd the lilies by the birdbath.<\/p>\n

He marveled at their
\nRare exuberance,
\nReturning year after year,
\nThrusting their stems
\nInsistently
\nThrough the hard clay soil,
\nTheir blooms growing
\nEver more exquisite
\nEven as the faces
\nOf the ones he’d loved
\nGrew fainter,
\nAs if the dead were
\nReaching out to him
\nAnd saying,
\nWe once were thus,
\nRemember us.
