Perhaps it is no more and no<br \/>\nless than the miles between<\/p>\n<p>the words you have spoken<br \/>\nand the words left unspoken,<br \/>\nnever to be spoken.<\/p>\n<p>Never to be spoken<br \/>\nbeyond stone and sod<br \/>\nand shovels rusting in rusting sheds<\/p>\n<p>and all that is not concerned<br \/>\nwith whispers and all<br \/>\nthat our hands have touched.<\/p>\n<p>And when do the voices begin to begin<br \/>\n(as a black hole that might draw<br \/>\none in to see where one has been)<\/p>\n<p>from dark rooms with clock-less corners<br \/>\nAnd when do they begin to end<br \/>\nwhile candles flicker the absence<\/p>\n<p>of breath, or the cold feels colder,<br \/>\nor you shake awaiting a shawl<br \/>\nas the sea dries in an old woman&#8217;s breast<\/p>\n<p>and you know now actually and for the first<br \/>\ntime how small time is<br \/>\nThe best we can hope<\/p>\n<p>is nothing disturbs our death;<br \/>\nthat it comes as clean<br \/>\nas a handful of ice.<\/p>\n<p>###<\/p>\n<p>Richard Brobst was co-founder and co-editor of the national poetry journal, ALBATROSS, from 1986-1998.
