Nights I go looking
\nfor the whippoorwill
\nbut she’s not to be found,
\nspotted feathers restless
\nas the cursive letters
\nin my handwriting book.
\nI saw bank swallows
\nswoop into their burrow
\nalong the marsh,
\none brood, a clutch of five.
\nToday’s Saturday, and
\nmy grandfather has woven
\nleaves into a hand,
\nwrapped the biggest
\none to bind.
\nWhen the market bell rings
\nbuyers scatter
\nthe aisles inspecting,
\nsmelling for mold,
\none stops for a moment
\nunder the light
\nthat through the vented
\nroof hits a cluster:
\nrestoring it to
\nwhat is has been,
\nwhat it will be—
\ndazzlingly on fire.

Recipient of The Fellowship of Southern Writers Award for Poetry, Charlotte Matthews is author of two full length collections: Still Enough to Be Dreaming and Green Stars. Most recently her work has received recognition from NPR where she was the featured poet. Matthews is a professor at Hollins University and the University of Virginia.
