Hallowe’en<\/h1>\n

Pixie, kobold, elf, and sprite
\nAll are on their rounds to-night,
\nIn the wan moon’s silver ray
\nThrives their helter-skelter play.<\/p>\n

Fond of cellar, barn, or stack
\nTrue unto the almanac,
\nThey present to credulous eyes
\nStrange hobgoblin mysteries.<\/p>\n

Cabbage-stumps straws wet with dew
\nApple-skins, and chestnuts too,
\nAnd a mirror for some lass
\nShow what wonders come to pass.<\/p>\n

Doors they move, and gates they hide
\nMischiefs that on moonbeams ride
\nAre their deeds, and, by their spells,
\nLove records its oracles.<\/p>\n

Don’t we all, of long ago
\nBy the ruddy fireplace glow,
\nIn the kitchen and the hall,
\nThose queer, coof-like pranks recall<\/p>\n

Eery shadows were they then
\nBut to-night they come again;
\nWere we once more but sixteen
