Your eyes say: cautious man,<br \/>\nsuspicious of knives<br \/>\neven in the hands of cooks.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve never been taught to cook,<br \/>\npoor baby, or love?<br \/>\nI see the way you carry a knife<br \/>\nfor protection, not for conjuring sauce.<br \/>\nBy my stove, a man&#8217;s<br \/>\nsafe in the heat.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll squeeze past to fire the heat;<br \/>\nit&#8217;s time to cook.<br \/>\nThe onions are prepped. You man<br \/>\nthe pot. Yes. Snap off my hat and shoes. Love<br \/>\nme like a green bean in the buttery sauce.<br \/>\nForget the knife.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no need for a knife;<br \/>\ngreen beans break clean. With slow heat<br \/>\nsauce<br \/>\nseeps from our very pores as we cook.<br \/>\nOnions, beans and love,<br \/>\ncan convince any man.<\/p>\n<p>Garlic intoxicates, too, and men<br \/>\nstronger then you have given up their knives,<br \/>\nmaking love,<br \/>\nunhinged by the heat<br \/>\nand the smell of the sauce<br \/>\non the stove of a cook.<\/p>\n<p>Loneliness ebbs when I cook.<br \/>\n&#8220;Nice,&#8221; says the man.<br \/>\nIt simply dissolves in the sauce,<br \/>\ncut together without even a butter knife,<br \/>\na stirred-up love<br \/>\nbetter with time and heat.<\/p>\n<p>I bathe the cook top, splashed with sauce,<br \/>\ngrateful to the man,<br \/>\nhis knife and his heat.<\/p>\n<p>###<br \/>\nJanice Scully lives in Syracuse, New York and writes poetry, fiction and non-fiction for children and adults.
