They always told him
\n“Contain yourself.”
\nAnd what surged through
\nhim stopped at his feet.
\nThe blood
\nbursting through
\nthe crooked tributaries of his toes
\nthe contours
\nof each foot’s
\narching vein.
\nIt splashed
\nagainst the
\nleathery walls,
\nthe black shoelaces
\ncurved like
\na hunchback’s spine
\ndiving to the
\ndarkened
\nrecesses–
\nto be
\nsmashed
\nby his gait
\nin the
\nsoul
\nof the
\nshoe.<\/p>\n

\nDoug Holder’s work has been featured in The Brooklyn Voice, LUMMOX Journal, Poesy, PRESA, and many others. He is founder of the Ibbetson Street Press, and he teaches writing at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston and Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. For the past 25 years he has led poetry workshops for psych. patients at McLean Hospital outside of Boston.
