I slammed all the<br \/>\ndoors and windows of myself<br \/>\nclosed. I willed my heart to<br \/>\nkeep beating. My lungs to<br \/>\nsuck in air. I am not ready yet.<br \/>\nThough my heart is blocked and<br \/>\nleaking. My kidneys have failed<br \/>\nand my body lies here pale and<br \/>\ntired. I want to always see the<br \/>\nbeauty of a rose and my little dog<br \/>\nwatching for me from the window.<br \/>\nI want to climb again the hills of<br \/>\nSan Francisco with my grandson.<br \/>\nThe place I am from. And my<br \/>\ngranddaughter I love her with<br \/>\nall my heart. I have opened all<br \/>\nthe doors and windows of myself<br \/>\nto let the air rush in.<\/p>\n<p>###<\/p>\n<p>Jean Varda\u2019s poetry has appeared in: The California Quarterly, The Berkeley Poetry Review, The Lucid Stone, Poetry Motel, The Santa Fe Sun, Avocet A Journal of Nature Poetry, River Poets Journal and Prompt online literary magazine.
