at the tattoo parlor
\ni overhear Tom
\nthe tattoo artist
\ntalking about writing
\nwith this curly-haired girl in his chair.
\nshe\u2019s sitting next to me
\nas i wait for Tre
\nto size my stencil
\nand i\u2019m thinking she might go to Berkeley,
\nand she\u2019s looking at Tom
\nwith these wide, wincing eyes
\nas he stabs through her skin
\nand babbles into her ear
\nabout how Hemingway was shit,
\nand everyone writing today is, too,
\nshit,
\nall of \u2018em,
\nand i notice this girl with the curly hair
\nclose her eyes,
\nbut i don\u2019t think Tom does
\nbecause he keeps rolling along,
\ndenouncing one author
\nor style
\nor time period
\nas \u201cshit\u201d.
\n\u201cYOU HAVE TO BE SHIT TO SELL THESE DAYS!\u201d
\nTom snarls
\nand there\u2019s Marlboro on his breath and beard,
\nand this girl with the curly hair,
\neyes still shut,
\nevery once in awhile
\ni watch as she bites her lip
\nand bobs her head
\nin agreement with the words,
\nwhile Tom\u2019s ink bleeds from the lines
\nshe had thought
\nshe wanted
