Washed Away<\/h1>\n

Rushing in to a truck stop,
\nThree a.m.
\nA quick rest room visit; coffee.
\nI stand alongside her.
\nShe leans in deeply over a sink,
\nPeering in the mirror,
\nWide-eyed under the fluorescent light.<\/p>\n

I try not to stare.
\nShe\u2019s washing her face
\nWith the bright green soap from the wall dispenser,
\nPumping out more and more,
\nLathering it up until her face is thick with it.
\nHer diaphanous gown grazes the floor.
\nHer silver heels are perilously high.
\nShe may be 17.<\/p>\n

Do you want some coffee? Some food, I ask,
\nQuietly,
\nShe turns to me, her face traced with suds,
\nNo. Thank you, Ma\u2019am,
\nIn a tone that heads off
\nAnything more.<\/p>\n

She needed to eat.
\nHer face must be stinging by now.
\nShe\u2019ll snag her dress on those heels.<\/p>\n
