Crawford<br \/>\nWho seemed distracted<br \/>\nForgot our names<br \/>\nMumbled a vague plan<br \/>\nFor the week ahead<br \/>\nShe didn\u2019t look like the God<br \/>\nHe needed<br \/>\nI left him there, tubes and tests<br \/>\nMRI\u2019s and sonograms<br \/>\nEndless beeping in the halls<\/p>\n<p>That night<br \/>\nI called room service to see if God could<br \/>\nStop by, say a prayer<br \/>\nFor a son with curdled hope<br \/>\nLiving on the black edge of a knife<br \/>\nFor a mother pacing<br \/>\nCircles of terror<br \/>\nOn the worn carpet<br \/>\nAt Chaparral Suites<br \/>\nIn Scottsdale, Arizona<br \/>\nPlagued by the betrayal<br \/>\nOf her perfect health<br \/>\nWhich I would trade for<br \/>\nHis in a heartbeat<br \/>\nPerhaps arrange it with God<br \/>\nWhen He stops by<\/p>\n<p>I got a recording<br \/>\nroom service closes at midnight<br \/>\nI opened the minibar<br \/>\nAn avatar of God<br \/>\nAn amnesty from grief<br \/>\nScotch soothes<br \/>\nLike an answered prayer<\/p>\n<p>###<\/p>\n<p>Claire Scott is an award winning poet who has been nominated twice for the Pushcart Prize (2013 and 2014).
