There\u2019s a certain,<br \/>\nremarkable maliciousness to love,<br \/>\nthe neuroscience behind it, very<br \/>\ntelling of how, despite all that talk<br \/>\nof being the most powerful predators,<br \/>\nwe\u2019re still prey to the fallacies<br \/>\nof fancy and words. The amygdala is<br \/>\nalmond shaped, sitting pretty like<br \/>\nthe crown jewel on the temporal<br \/>\nlobe, near the side of your head- you<br \/>\nwouldn\u2019t notice it, unless you paid<br \/>\ncareful attention (just like she would<br \/>\nhave slipped away if you didn\u2019t catch<br \/>\nthe sparkle of her ring against the<br \/>\nbar\u2019s strategic dim lighting), and its<br \/>\nsize belies the histories of its growth<br \/>\n(just like how you would\u2019ve never<br \/>\nguessed how a body that tiny could<br \/>\nhold so much anger, and beauty, and<br \/>\npassion), and this is where the neurons<br \/>\nthat engage the stress response in<br \/>\nyour body fire from (like the sparkling,<br \/>\nvenomous barbs she shot at you,<br \/>\nleaving physical reactions in their<br \/>\nwake), leading to a fight or flight<br \/>\nsyndrome (you barricading yourself<br \/>\ninto the bathroom for three hours,<br \/>\nmaking winding mental lists of the<br \/>\npros and cons of leaving at that very<br \/>\nmoment), now mixed with all the<br \/>\nserotonin your brain could produce,<br \/>\nand then some more (your lips against<br \/>\nher neck as you felt the thrum of her<br \/>\nheartbeat pick up with yours), and<br \/>\nyou fought, you fought, you fought,<br \/>\nfirst her, then the doubts, then yourself-<br \/>\nalways finding reasons to make up<br \/>\nand make pretty till you found an<br \/>\nunknown reflection on the mirror<br \/>\nyou never knew you had on the roof-<br \/>\nif you were to be diagnosed, it<br \/>\nwould have been with addiction,<br \/>\nnot love, not romance, not want,<br \/>\nnot need, just sordid inability.<br \/>\n(but you already knew that, didn\u2019t you?)<\/p>\n<p>###<\/p>\n<p>Harnidh is a 21-year-old student from India.
