Spring in Northern Japan<\/h2>\n

Futons now hang on metal bars
\noutside apartment windows in Shiogama.
\nPlastic clips grip the thick cotton, keep them
\nfrom falling on narrow streets.<\/p>\n

I wander through alleys
\nof paper lanterns and indigo curtains
\nof sushi restaurants where
\nclotheslines do not hang through streets,
\njust those metal bars.<\/p>\n

My washer gurgles and chokes
\non my underwear, socks, shirts.
\nBang, bang, bang,
\nit whimpers through soapsuds.
\nI press my hands on the machine,
\nmurmur apologetic words.<\/p>\n
