Perhaps I heard 9:50 for 9:15.
\nWe missed the express bus
\nto Kansas City, had to take a local,
\nall night, stops at every little Kansas
\ntown. We stepped down
\nthe narrow passage between seats
\nin darkness, settled into cushions
\nof grumpiness with nothing outside
\nto distract except shuffle-footed employees
\nbowing down to the gaped-open metal
\nmouth below our window.
\nSo when the shadowy wraith entered,
\nstopped beside his elbow,
\nhe quickly stood to lift her case
\nabove our heads. \u201cYou\u2019re a preacher,
\naren\u2019t you?\u201d came the Cassandran
\npronouncement from the shadows.
\n\u201cI can always tell.\u201d
\nTheology student might not
\nhave lived up to her expectation,
\nbut he was spooked.
\nGreyhound nights hold many voices
\n\u2026 a time for secrets \u2026 a place
\nfor the slightly or wildly tetched.
\nThe humming bullets slips
\nthrough prairie nights,
\nlike Charon\u2019s boat full
\nof truths hovering
\nsomewhere between heaven and earth.<\/p>\n
