Centering the cross hairs
\nof the mercenary
\nsquarely on the essence
\nof the atom,<\/p>\n

he squeezes the trigger
\nof time. For his slingshot
\nof bewilderment,
\nhe polishes the stones<\/p>\n

of his thoughts.
\nHis talisman
\nis the limit of knowledge.
\nSnagging rarefaction<\/p>\n

on the fishhook
\nof the commonplace,
\nhe scrawls, with the ink
\nof crows, the sacred<\/p>\n

alphabet of angels,
\nsacrificing, on the altar
\nof language, the lamb
\nof his finest hours.<\/p>\n

Larry D.
