On Cooking Krakens<\/p>\n

The stalls of Italian markets
\ndisplay four different
\ntypes of octopus and five
\nsizes of squids
\nwith glassy eyes \u2013
\npiteous nautilus
\nfrom Hokusai\u2019s erotica.<\/p>\n

I learned with practice how to
\nextract their entrails
\nwithout piercing the ink sac,
\nhow to cut the cuttlefish\u2019s
\nmantle to get the pen,
\nproud gladius raised against me.<\/p>\n

I am not the fisherman\u2019s wife
\ndisarmed kraken,
\nthere\u2019s no need to resist
\nwith your sharp beak
\nand your toy tentacles.<\/p>\n

I discovered the squeeze
\nwhen one squishes the skin,
\nits plasticity once peeled \u2013
\nWhat a strange appeal!
\nAn opal ghost floats in the basin.<\/p>\n
