\nTO IRIS, IN BOW STREET, CONVENT GARDEN<\/p>\n

SAY, cruel IRIS, pretty rake,
\nDear mercenary beauty,
\nWhat annual offering shall I make,
\nExpressive of my duty?<\/p>\n

My heart, a victim to thine eyes,
\nShould I at once deliver,
\nSay, would the angry fair one prize
\nThe gift, who slights the giver?<\/p>\n

A bill, a jewel, watch, or toy,
\nMy rivals give?and let ’em;
\nIf gems, or gold, impart a joy,
\nI’ll give them?when I get ’em.<\/p>\n

I’ll give?but not the full-blown rose,
\nOr rose-bud more in fashion;
\nSuch short-liv’d offerings but disclose
\nA transitory passion.<\/p>\n

I’ll give thee something yet unpaid,
\nNot less sincere, than civil:
