Late Spring On The Potomac River Near Hancock, Maryland<\/span><\/p>\n

Cold water numbs legs
\nputting canoes into the
\nriver. Partially leafed trees
\ncover the recent remains
\nof floods: a Styrofoam cooler,
\nbottles, a one armed shirt.
\nLeaning back, paddling down-
\nstream is easy. Small Bass
\nfooled by lures are released
\nto someday be fooled for the
\nlast time. The current and
\nwhite water will shrink in summer
\nheat to expose sentinel rocks
\nleaking their gift of salt to
\na downstream sea.<\/p>\n

Robert Halleck has been writing poetry since 1958. His recent work has appeared in the San Diego Poetry Annual, Chiron, Third Wednesday, The Peeking Cat Review, and Main Street Rag. He is a member of San Diego’s Not Dead Yet Poets and hopes to remain so for a long time. For a number of years he has attended the Kenyon Review’s Summer Workshop.<\/p>\n
