I was eight.<br \/>\nmy father dug,<br \/>\nwanting to show<br \/>\nthat he could bend the world<br \/>\nto city hands. the house<br \/>\nhad been<br \/>\na long time<br \/>\nunoccupied<br \/>\nbefore we took it; trees grew in the kitchen<br \/>\nand the plaster walls would crumble<br \/>\nto even my<br \/>\nweak touch.<\/p>\n<p>they&#8217;d got it cheap,<br \/>\nmy parents,<br \/>\nand intended<br \/>\neventually<br \/>\nthat it would be broken<br \/>\nlike a dog<br \/>\nand forced to piss<br \/>\noutside. there were spiders<br \/>\nliving in every corner<br \/>\nand a long war<br \/>\nwas waged against the mice<br \/>\nand the rabbits on the hill.<br \/>\nas a fire escape<br \/>\nheavy stones<br \/>\nwere placed on each windowsill<br \/>\nand the paint was done<br \/>\nto keep the damp out of the woodwork<br \/>\nand seal the place<br \/>\nfor visitors.<\/p>\n<p>but bad Irish weather<br \/>\nfell down<br \/>\nand crushed minds<br \/>\nlike the top of a the mountain behind us.<br \/>\nit engulfed the place<br \/>\nlike frogspawn<br \/>\nclumping on rocks.<br \/>\npride lost;<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t know<br \/>\nthe last time<br \/>\nanyone<br \/>\nhas bothered to visit.<\/p>\n<p>DS Maolalai has been nominated for Best of the Web and twice for the Pushcart Prize.
