The Hippopotamus<\/h1>\n

?????? Similiter et omnes revereantur Diaconos, ut
\n?????? mandatum Jesu Christi; et Episcopum, ut Jesum
\n?????? Christum, existentem filium Patris; Presbyteros
\n?????? autem, ut concilium Dei et conjunctionem
\n?????? Apostolorum. Sine his Ecclesia non vocatur; de
\n?????? quibus suadeo vos sic habeo.<\/p>\n

?????? And when this epistle is read among you, cause
\n?????? that it be read also in the church of the
\n?????? Laodiceans.<\/p>\n

???? The broad-backed hippopotamus
\n???? Rests on his belly in the mud;
\n???? Although he seems so firm to us
\n???? He is merely flesh and blood.<\/p>\n

???? Flesh-and-blood is weak and frail,
\n???? Susceptible to nervous shock;
\n???? While the True Church can never fail
\n???? For it is based upon a rock.<\/p>\n

???? The hippo’s feeble steps may err
\n???? In compassing material ends,
\n???? While the True Church need never stir
\n???? To gather in its dividends.<\/p>\n

???? The ‘potamus can never reach
\n???? The mango on the mango-tree;
\n???? But fruits of pomegranate and peach
\n???? Refresh the Church from over sea.<\/p>\n

???? At mating time the hippo’s voice
\n???? Betrays inflexions hoarse and odd,
\n???? But every week we hear rejoice
\n???? The Church, at being one with God.<\/p>\n

???? The hippopotamus’s day
\n???? Is passed in sleep; at night he hunts;
\n???? God works in a mysterious way-
\n???? The Church can sleep and feed at once.<\/p>\n

???? I saw the ‘potamus take wing
\n???? Ascending from the damp savannas,
\n???? And quiring angels round him sing
\n???? The praise of God, in loud hosannas.<\/p>\n

???? Blood of the Lamb shall wash him clean
\n???? And him shall heavenly arms enfold,
\n???? Among the saints he shall be seen
\n???? Performing on a harp of gold.<\/p>\n

???? He shall be washed as white as snow,
\n???? By all the martyr’d virgins kiss,
\n???? While the True Church remains below
