Deep inside the Texas night
\na window shatters.<\/p>\n

A thief \u2014 burglar,
\nor rapist \u2014
\nintrudes a leg into our home,
\nbooted foot<\/p>\n

grits down on broken glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad!\u201d
\nI whisper-shout.
\n\u201cDad! Someone\u2019s breaking in!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJesus Christ, Christophah\u201d
\nhe replies,
\nhis voice cocked at it New Hampshire angle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a buncha ashes
\nin a jah
\nin Illinois.\u201d<\/p>\n

In life,
\nhe was no help either.<\/p>\n

I grab my pig spear
\nthat stands bedside guard,
\nslide one naked foot free of the bedroom,
\nthen another,<\/p>\n

as I move quietly
\ntoward the creak on the stairs.<\/p>\n
