We held their line,<br \/>\nWith bombers posted, Lewis guns well placed,<br \/>\nAnd clink of shovels deepening the shallow trench.<br \/>\nThe place was rotten with dead; green clumsy legs<br \/>\nHigh-booted, sprawled and grovelled along the saps;<br \/>\nAnd trunks, face downward, in the sucking mud,<br \/>\nWallowed like trodden sand-bags loosely filled;<br \/>\nAnd naked sodden buttocks, mats of hair,<br \/>\nBulged, clotted heads slept in the plastering slime.<br \/>\nAnd then the rain began,?the jolly old rain!<br \/>\n?<\/p>\n<p>A yawning soldier knelt against the bank,<br \/>\nStaring across the morning blear with fog;<br \/>\nHe wondered when the Allemands would get busy;<br \/>\nAnd then, of course, they started with five-nines<br \/>\nTraversing, sure as fate, and never a dud.<br \/>\nMute in the clamour of shells he watched them burst<br \/>\nSpouting dark earth and wire with gusts from hell,<br \/>\nWhile posturing giants dissolved in drifts of smoke.<br \/>\nHe crouched and flinched, dizzy with galloping fear,<br \/>\nSick for escape,?loathing the strangled horror<br \/>\nAnd butchered, frantic gestures of the dead.<br \/>\n?<\/p>\n<p>An officer came blundering down the trench:<br \/>\n&#8220;Stand-to and man the fire-step!&#8221; On he went ?<br \/>\nGasping and bawling, &#8220;Fire-step ? counter-attack!&#8221;<br \/>\nThen the haze lifted. Bombing on the right<br \/>\nDown the old sap: machine-guns on the left;<br \/>\nAnd stumbling figures looming out in front.<br \/>\n&#8220;O Christ, they&#8217;re coming at us!&#8221; Bullets spat,<br \/>\nAnd he remembered his rifle ? rapid fire ?<br \/>\n?<\/p>\n<p>And started blazing wildly ? then a bang<br \/>\nCrumpled and spun him sideways, knocked him out<br \/>\nTo grunt and wriggle: none heeded him; he choked<br \/>\nAnd fought the flapping veils of smothering gloom,<br \/>\nLost in a blurred confusion of yells and groans ?<br \/>\nDown, and down, and down, he sank and drowned,<br \/>\nBleeding to death.
