In those words there rings from other years<br \/>\nThe echo of a long low cry,<br \/>\nWhere a proud spirit wrestles with its tears<br \/>\nIn loneliest agony.<\/p>\n<p>And, as I touch that lock, strange visions throng<br \/>\nUpon my soul with dreamy grace?<br \/>\nOf woman&#8217;s hair, the theme of poet&#8217;s song<br \/>\nIn every time and place.<\/p>\n<p>A child&#8217;s bright tresses, by the breezes kissed<br \/>\nTo sweet disorder as she flies,<br \/>\nVeiling, beneath a cloud of golden mist,<br \/>\nFlushed cheek and laughing eyes<\/p>\n<p>Or fringing, like a shadow, raven-black,<br \/>\nThe glory of a queen-like face<br \/>\nOr from a gipsy&#8217;s sunny brow tossed back<br \/>\nIn wild and wanton grace<\/p>\n<p>Or crown-like on the hoary head of Age,<br \/>\nWhose tale of life is well-nigh told?<br \/>\nOr, last, in dreams I make my pilgrimage<br \/>\nTo Bethany of old.<\/p>\n<p>I see the feast the purple and the gold<br \/>\nThe gathering crowd of Pharisees,<br \/>\nWhose scornful eyes are centred to behold<br \/>\nYon woman on her knees.<\/p>\n<p>The stifled sob rings strangely on mine ears,<br \/>\nWrung from the depth of sin&#8217;s despair:<br \/>\nAnd still she bathes the sacred feet with tears,<br \/>\nAnd wipes them with her hair.<\/p>\n<p>He scorned not then the simple loving deed<br \/>\nOf her, the lowest and the last;<br \/>\nThen scorn not thou, but use with earnest heed<br \/>\nThis relic of the past.<\/p>\n<p>The eyes that loved it once no longer wake:<br \/>\nSo lay it by with reverent care<br \/>\nTouching it tenderly for sorrow&#8217;s sake?<br \/>\nIt is a woman&#8217;s hair.<\/p>\n<p>Feb. 17, 1862.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Only A Woman&#8217;s Hair by Lewis Carroll Only a woman&#8217;s hair!
