Burd: The Abduction
Author
R. D. House
Author Bio
R. D. House writes science fiction with deadpan humor reminiscent of Terry Pratchett. He has a lifelong love of action adventure tales in historical settings, which influences his genre bending stories.
His first book, Burd: The Abduction (published August 2014) is available on Amazon Kindle. “I’ve written stories for years, which gives quite a backlog to refine and eventually publish” House said. “Kindle publishing is wonderful mechanism to get a book in the marketplace, but in the end a book can never succeed unless it is well written and meets the reader’s desire for information and/or entertainment. I try to include plenty of factual information despite however wildly my imagination functions while writing a story.”
House has two follow up books in the Burd series well under way, with How We Do It (Burd Book 2) set to be published in early October 2014. He plans to publish an unrelated science fiction action adventure book following the release of the third Burd book he has been working on for
House was born in Liberty, Texas in 1947. On the sea he was a shrimp boat captain, in the air as a crop duster and on the land he had an eventful career as an investigative sergeant with the Houston, Texas Police Department.
Description
It is 1940 on a remote ranch in Texas. The space aliens known as the Grays in UFO literature are collecting fauna and flora for experimentation and profit, when they come upon a stray chicken. She has some unusual traits including more bravery than is usually found in her species. Beep and Tarragon the expedition leaders decide to collect her, but a power setting mishap leads to a dead hen.
They find a viable egg, which reminds the aliens there is an experiment in gene manipulation that this egg might facilitate. They do their mysterious gene splicing and manage to plant the egg with an innocent young girl on the nearby ranch as part of a socialization experiment for the soon to be hatched rooster man.
Burd is a unique creature. He talks, flies, reasons remarkably well and he has super human strength and ability as a soldier. The Grays are trying to develop a prototype warrior to strengthen their military capability against their enemies the Reptilians, another off world species deeply involved in dominating the Earth.
The Reptilians are backing the Nazis and the Illuminati in World War II. They have evil designs on humans for the future. The Grays feel their harvest of biological fluids from their many human abductees who live on Moon Base, located on the dark side, is only their prerogative as superior beings. It’s not looking good for humans caught in the middle of a struggle between two powerful outer space empires. Both alien species decide Burd, the rooster man, could be a key to their plans.
Will the rooster man obey the alien puppet masters, or will he be molded by friendships with ranch hands, colorful circus people and others? Ultimately will Burd exercise free will to fight for freedom on Earth, or will he even have a choice?
Along the way to Burd’s perilous choices there is a bankrupt ranch and a failing circus to save. There are friends needing help to escape from the dark side of the moon back to Earth. There are circus shows to headline. There is flying to do and falsely accused rioters to spring from jail. A rooster might spend a lot of time hanging around a chicken coop, but a rooster man’s work is never done.
Book excerpt
Viejo Jorge did not like anything unnatural in nature. He fully believed the many stories he heard from his youth about witches, shape shifters, chupacapbras, ghosts, evil spirits and more. He thought he glimpsed a chupacabra one time when he was only slightly drunk. As for witches, he knew they existed because he married a witch when he was a young man of seventeen. She was pretty and acted sweet to everyone until the door closed to their casita. She made his life a hell on Earth. She knew everything he was thinking because of her strange mind reading powers. The food she cooked was poisonous, not like his mother’s at all. He had told her that once early on and that was the first time he saw her become the witch.
If he wanted to stay strong to work he had to grab a few bites of food at cantinas. The food there tasted pretty good and it was free if only you bought a few cervezas. Sometimes the witch came for him late at night with her eyes flashing evil. The cantina would empty in less than a minute. The owner hated that, but he ran away too. And then the witch would grab his ear, always the left ear, which was bigger now than the other and lead him home. It was some kind of witch magic which paralyzed him and he could do nothing but go with her. Then all night long he would dream of monsters crawling all over him and taking the advantage. Was she not a witch truly?
Viejo Jorge was called Young Jorge at one time. He believed he was able to become Old Jorge because he ran like the wind away from strange things. He ran like a six year old girl runs from a rattlesnake. He could not run away from the witch he married though. He dealt with that one with many prayers to the saints. That one could not be outrun. Lucky for him a stupid man thought he stole her from him. He was a pots and pans salesman from Mexico City. When she rode away with the traveling salesman, he was so happy. That is when he went north to America, swam the river and had a wonderful life at this ranch.
It would not be a wonderful life this afternoon when Maria came home from school to find that he had killed her rooster. Well, he might as well dress it out. As he walked to the back of the barn where his chopping block and work table were located, along with a shed to cover the table, the chicken seemed to stir. Viejo stopped and looked carefully. Yes, the rooster was breathing again. Oh mama, what to do now? The rooster’s neck was clearly broken. He would never be the same. The old man continued to walk. This was one plump rooster. At least he would taste good in some dumplings.
