Book excerpt

During that first twelve months, Mike probably saw a total of six different images, but they were unclear and fragmented like all images in a kaleidoscope. They were also blurry like an old black and white television on the fritz. After a while, the focus became clearer and more distinct even though it remained as broken, irregular pieces. Even so, Mike could make out enough from what he saw to understand that the visions were of an event.

It was often months later before Mike learned of the outcome; that what he’d seen through the kaleidoscope had happened. Being out in the desert, in a third world country, or on top of Mt. Everest for several weeks or months didn’t particularly lend itself to current events or knowing whether or not he had seen the images first or after the incident had taken place. Most of the images were of obscure events, not major news, and were often broadcast for only a few days after the event occurred. It was a while before Mike realized that he saw visions of the future. That was not welcoming news to Mike. It wasn’t a gift that he wanted or would have desired. It alarmed him, and he often cursed Adom silently for the tap that opened this doorway to the future. Now, fifteen years later, Mike was still where he had been then, and he didn’t know what to do about it. It seemed his life had been on hold from the moment Adom had tapped him on the brow. At one time, he’d wanted to find love and have a family. Now, he simply hid from life and the dreams he had once held dear.

At age forty-four, Mike had finally reached a tipping point, a precipice where he could continue hiding from his dreams or seek help. Mike chose to seek help. He placed a call to an old friend, Dr. Nelson Fitch, and Monday would signal the beginning of something new. He had no idea what would happen next, and for Mike, that was the scariest part of all.
