Book excerpt

ACT 1: BELIEVE IN YOURSELF SO THE WORLD WILL BELIEVE IN YOU

When the world tells you no, what will you do? Do you have the confidence to stand up for what you believe? There is an old saying my grandfather would always state to me, “99.9% is not good enough, and you are either 100% or 0%”. Though he was speaking in a religious sense, this message is also pertinent to following our dreams. We cannot fully expect to achieve greatness if we are 50% invested in our dreams and 50% invested in the dreams of others. The dreams you have are yours, others may have similar dreams but the actual steps and thoughts to accomplish your dreams are unique. Most of the things created in the world today (For ex: Sports and entertainment) were already created or mastered by someone else, but then the area was manipulate by a current artist or athlete and molded with their unique style and delivery to convey the same message. Often times we look to create the first apple computer, but we overlook creating the foundation of the computer, which was built from another computer. This is not suggesting for you to copycat someone else’s style, but rather insisting we define who we are first, believing in our dreams and uniqueness. It is in our unique nature where our purpose and success resides.

My problem is I never stop believing in my greatness, maybe I am crazy or maybe because of the countless hours my parents instilled the idea of greatness within me or the community telling me my family was great. Who knows? Success is a roll of the dice if you equate success to the judgment of society, but if internal fulfillment is your success you are successful already. As a kid, I knew I would be successful, there wasn’t a doubt in my mind because I had already believed I was successful internally by being respectful to others, enjoying the silver linings in life, making a good day out of bad days and learning how to forgive. But I did not realize this until I failed at trying to be successful in the eyes of others instead of myself.

Growing up we have a lot of questions that need to be answered by life and some are only learned through trial and error. I still believed all my dreams would eventually come true but I didn’t really understand the value of my dreams because my dreams in my youth were more about material things and less of self-fulfilling things. But as I began to age and become wiser, and the material things began to lose their value, I understood I had achieved success already. In the form of love from my family, respect from the community and being a role model who in turn helps others achieve greatness. Believing in you is about releasing the pressure to satisfy the demand from others. The earlier we set the bar (Goals & objectives) for success in our life, the easier our life will be. The repercussions for not setting the bar are that we allow others to set the bar for us.

I wake up in the morning feeling like can do anything, but I understand to accomplish the task I have to be fully submerged in it, sacrificing my mind, body and soul. There is only plan A and I will give 200% to make sure I finish that which I start. Maybe it was my close relationship with God and understanding he would stick by me through all things I put him through or as I repented for my sins and gave him all the glory for my success. Whatever the reason may be I believe that dreams do come true with a little hard work, determination, sacrifice and self-discipline.

I remember when I was 28 years old and instead of going to the Caribbean with my friends I decided to go to Africa, because it had always been a dream for me. My friends would ask me, “I always wanted to go to Africa. How can I do it?” My response was, “No you didn’t, because if you really did you already would have.” See we often say things out of wants but don’t really see them as needs in our mind, just pure curiosity. Africa had always been a dream of mine because of my aunt’s pilgrimage to Africa in the 1970s, which produced my name “Oumar”, and I was curious to see if Africa was the place the movies depicted it to be. Something within me wanted to learn more about what was driving my curiosity to discover more about myself. As a result, I sacrificed personal pleasure and temporary gratification to satisfy a lifelong goal, whereas most people settle for the needs of others before they satisfy the needs of themselves. This can become a problem as we begin to sacrifice our dreams for the dreams of others; eventually we will begin to understand the sacrifice and begin to re-prioritize our priorities. The question should not be whether dreams come true the questions should be how important are your dreams to you? Then, what are you willing to sacrifice to achieve your dreams?

Too often we provide reasons why we can’t do something. This seems like gibberish or subliminal procrastination to me because if you truly love doing something you will do it regardless of what you have or have not, you will find away. I have played basketball since I was 12 years old and never looked for reward for my competitiveness; it was something I just did because I loved the game. I would have loved to get paid for playing basketball, but it was not meant for me to do so. I still play the sport today for recreational and health purposes, nothing will stop you from doing something you love. Sometimes we convert our dreams to nightmares because of the excuses and limitations we place on our dreams.

Last year, I flew to four different continents with a six-month time frame. I would have never imagined that as a kid because I’m not rich at all, but I’m frugal and resourceful. See when you have a dream and a goal you want to accomplish, going out to a party, buying a nice care, or other distractions moving you further away from your goal are not important. You will focus all your energy, finances and thoughts in accomplishing your dreams because the internal thirst for fulfillment and success is addictive.

Dreams are real; we just have to wake up, work hard and practice patience until the dream becomes our reality, instead of settling for the first opportunity to come our way. The most dangerous person in the world is the person who still believes in their dreams and uses their creativity to turn their dreams into reality. To make your dreams come true, I want you to follow the following three rules:

1. Choose a dream- choose one dream and focus all your energy on this dream. The dream does not have to perfect but it does have to resonate with your internal desire to feel fulfilled. I wish I could tell you what drives you internally but this would take a few counseling session, so use your best judgment. Think of something from your childhood to adolescence and regardless of how crazy it may sound, think about it and choose to dream.
2. Commit to it- commit to making sure you will make this dream come true or die trying. To make sure your dream becomes your reality, you need to provide at a minimum 125% effort. This means mind, body and soul, sacrificing some casual entertainment opportunities to focus on making your dream come to fruition. You can either work hard for your dreams now or work extra hard for someone else making their dreams come true. I suggest now, while you have the energy to work for yourself.
3. Have faith- have faith in your dream, that God has a purpose for your life and no matter the outcome, it will be for a greater good. I have a friend who was trying to become a financial banker in the early 90’s in New York City. He obtained a wealth of success but eventually the industry collapsed. He thought he had lost his dreams but in the midst of the debacle he managed to get married, create a family and created something more than any amount of money could ever make him smile. My saying is this, “In an obstacle there is failure and opportunity, it is up to us which one we choose to see”. We have to have faith in the process and trust God to take care of us, because as Steve Jobs said, “we can’t connect the dots looking forward, we can only connect the dots looking behind us.”
“A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” Colin Powell
As you work to master these principles, I want you to reaffirm the following action in your life and build your mental stability. These actions align with the principles above and if incorporated daily, positive outcomes are sure to follow.
1. Believe in yourself- you are worthy and deserve greatness. Never doubt that.
2. Take your time-don’t rush a great thing and enjoy the journey. Enjoy the journey means to learn from your success and failure. When it’s time you will know.
3. Make better decisions- make decisions that put you closer to your goal. Stay focused on the bigger picture. Think about the outcome and how it is helping or not helping you move closer to your dream.
4. Gain momentum- you have to be motivated like lions are motivated to attack their prey, not forced by an external force to hunt but rather internal. Find something within you to push you to greatness. I can want greatness for you and see it within you, but until you see what I see, greatness will remain dormant.
5. Think positivity- you don’t have to be a reverend but you need to find the positive in most things and try not to be held down by negative emotions or attitudes. In addition, be careful of the people you spend time with because they can become a burden on your thoughts, which will distract your focus of capturing your dreams.
6. Be persistent- never quit on yourself. Don’t give in or give up until you have given 125% effort. This is your dream you have to go above and beyond your call of duty to make sure it comes true, because this is your destiny. If you won’t chase it, who will.
7. Speak it- talk to yourself daily about your dream and what you are going to accomplish. Tell yourself everything will be okay and keep pepping yourself up for the opportunity to show others your purpose in life. As you speak it to yourself, the naysayer’s comments will become less relevant and comical.
8. Save your money- dreams in the early stage may cost some money and this may not be a lot but you will need to save enough money to sustain your way of living and pursue your dream. Be very frugal with your spending and don’t take away from your family during the time you are following your dream, you will have to work extra hard to accomplish your dream. Think if you don’t accomplish it the family does not eat.
9. Stay humble- somehow a humble person always seems to win in the end. Remain humble throughout your journey and treat others how you would want them to treat your parents or grandparents. Use your best judgment and understand karma is real and people are watching your every move. We live in a world where judgment is the norm, remain humble and keep smiling.
10. Pray for guidance- after the day has concluded and you have succeeded or failed, asked God for clarity and purpose for your journey. Build your relationship with God daily and talk to him about the things you aren’t sure of. I can’t describe the times I thought I knew something to be completely wrong and my gut was telling me the right thing. Take the time and pray more, clarity will be sure to follow.
