Book excerpt

A few deep breaths. A few drags of a cigarette. The only sounds from crickets and the ticking of seconds passing from my watch.

The shadows caressed the scenery like a blanket of soft velvet, with streetlamps giving off only the dimmest light every few blocks or so. I stood taking it all in for what seemed like a lifetime.

I’d ignored the truth, argued against its rational, and lamented on its implications, but in the back of my mind, the signs were there. But it was a truth I could only now see for what it was. A truth I was going to face in a few minutes time, and one I wasn’t sure I was ready for. Because whichever way this went, I’d have answers. I’d have the missing pieces, but did I want them? Could I handle them? I wasn’t sure, but it was better than the alternative of continuous conjecture.

In the distance, an owl screeched and I couldn’t help but think how completely removed from the rest of the world I was. Every bit looked exactly the same as it had a day ago, but it was all wrong, so foreign, that though the shapes, the outlines, the buildings, and the trees were all untouched, they were hard to recognize.
