Description

A 5 stars Readers’ Favorite book – Two children invent a scheme to sell their parents in order to keep their dog in the new children’s book by author Dr. Nicole Audet, “Parents for Sale” (published by AuthorHouse).

In this new 44-page, color-illustrated chapter-book, the Clark family encounters a dilemma. Twins Luke and Lucy don’t take care of their dog, Pistachio, as they had promised their parents they would. One day, their mom threatens to sell the dog. A few hours later, when Luke and Lucy’s parents go to the store, the twins concoct a plan to get rid of their parents, who could take Pistachio away from them forever.

As the story progresses, three groups of children from different families in the twins’ neighborhood approach Luke and Lucy with offers to buy, rent or trade the twins’ parents for various reasons. Each offer Luke and Lucy receive doesn’t seem worth it, so they decline. But one offer is better than others. A beautiful fairy comes to their door, offering to buy the twins’ parents for $300 and send them to look after orphaned children.

The deal sounds great to Luke and Lucy; they accept. But just as they agree to the sale, the fairy changes into her true form – a wicked witch with plans to turn the twins’ mom and dad into a stew. The twins try to renegotiate the deal and save their parents from the hungry witch, but to no avail. As they fight with the witch on her magic broom, Pistachio attempts to save the day.

Will Pistachio save the Clark family from their demise? Readers will find out the answer to this and other questions in this tale of morality and responsibility.

Parents for Sale by Dr. Nicole Audet is a charming and amusing children’s story offering a unique type of life lesson learning, and enticing the imagination of its young reading audience. Dr. Nicole Audet has created a tale containing a lesson within, but with a twist in the plot only a youthful mind could fully understand and appreciate. The imagination of a child is a powerful and unique attribute. The mind of a child is often unpredictable and excited by the unseen or magical elements that make thinking, creating, and learning fun. The author adjusts her writing to depict what the mind of a child would imagine. For example, as an adult reads and starts to comprehend the story and its plot, the adult mind would assume the story and its message would end with that life lesson being played out in a learning experience, such as a punishment or something of the like, but in fact it does just the opposite. The story leans towards a happier ending in the way a child would imagine it. This is exactly why the story
is brilliant and perfect for young readers; they can absolutely relate its concepts, emotions, and imaginative text.

Book excerpt

Chapter 1: Dog for Sale

Pistachio is a beautiful two-year-old Golden Retriever. She has lived happily with the Clarks since birth. Pistachio loves biscuits. She often rolls into a ball or jumps very high to get treats. The Clark twins, Luke and Lucy, have her do pirouettes for their friends. The twins also love to pet Pistachio’s soft, caramel-red coat.

Pistachio feels sad when the Clark parents shout at the twins because of her. She often hears Mrs. Clark complain, “Luke, Lucy, Pistachio is hungry and thirsty. Fill her bowls!”

Sometimes Mr. Clark screams, and Pistachio hides behind the lounge chair. One rainy day he said loudly, “Kids, it’s time to walk the dog, even if it’s raining outside!”

“After the show!” reply the twins, engrossed in their favorite TV show.

“Your father and I are walking the dog. We will have a family meeting when we come back,” says the mother.

Upon their return, wet from head to toe, dirty, and tired, the Clark parents summon the twins into the kitchen. The twins approach the table in silence, and then Mrs. Clark says dryly, “Luke, Lucy, we know that you like Pistachio. Unfortunately, we do not have the time or resources to keep her. We’ve decided to sell her. Your father and I are very tired. We work hard and spend long hours in traffic too. Our hands are already full with taking care of both of you.”

The twins gasp. “Sell Pistachio? Never!” they say in unison.

Chapter 2: Parents for Sale

“I promise to take care of Pistachio,” Luke implores.

The father looks at Luke and shakes his head. “I’ve heard that promise tons of times. Despite our warnings, your mother often ends up feeding Pistachio or walking her on rainy days.”

Lucy grabs her mother’s arms and pleads in a honey-toned voice, “Give us one last chance, Mommy.”

“There is no use trying to persuade us. We’ve already decided,” Mrs. Clark says with a look that does not invite negotiation. “Your father has already put a sign in the front lawn. We will sell Pistachio to a family that can raise her well.”

The twins began to cry, stamp their feet, and beg their parents. But this does not change the decision.

“We need to save her!” Lucy says, weeping.

“You’re right,” Luke replies. “We should go with her.”

“I have a much better idea,” says Lucy. “Let’s sell Mommy and Daddy instead. That way we won’t have to sell the dog.”

“But how are we going to do that?” Luke asks with a puzzled expression.

“We simply replace the sign!” says Lucy, happy with her brilliant idea.

Just then, Mrs. Clark opens the door and shouts, “Luke and Lucy, are you coming with us to the grocery store?”

“No, we’d rather stay with Pistachio, since this may be the last time,” Luke shouts back.

“Okay, but do not to open the door to strangers,” says twins’ father.

As soon as the car is out of sight, the twins and Pistachio go into the garage.

Luke begins painting big white letters on a piece of dark cardboard: PARENTS FOR SALE.
