Description
Weeks after scientists vanished on an unexplored island in search of a mysterious giant lizard, Grayson McGregor led a search and rescue mission to find them. A treacherous landing sunk their boat, thus leaving them stranded, With no other recourse, they venture into the forest so thick that it swallows up anything that enters.
What they discover are animals the world hasn’t seen for sixty-five-million years, which are intent on killing them. Making their dire situation even more perilous, earthquakes continue to shake the island, and the lakes and rivers strewn throughout the landscape have become acidic. Grayson believes the towering volcano — Hell’s Ridge — is close to erupting.
Time is running out to find her friends, and also to discover why dinosaurs exist on this island. Follow this fast-paced, roller coaster adventure where prehistory meets the present.
Book excerpt
Boots stomped against the grassy ground. Uneven breaths accompanied the frenzied running. A string of scientists plowed through a wall of thick thorns.
Dr. Emmanuel Hernandez glanced over his shoulder at the surviving eight members of his research team. “Quickly, follow me!” he yelled.
A bunker lay a few hundred yards ahead. Broad, overgrown weeds and plants on the right side swayed violently. Hoots and high-pitched screeches filled the air around them. A deafening, animalistic roar trumpeted through the forest. The ground shook. A flock of small birds broke from the trees.
Sweat dripped down Emmanuel’s copper-toned face. His stomach churned. The bunker seemed so far away. Could he still make it? Or perhaps they should veer left, into the woods. The forest ahead lay dark and unexplored, but at least it didn’t seem like their pursuers had gotten there first.
The tall, athletic Dr. Chandra Vasquez jumped over a decaying tree trunk. She landed, only to have a twisting vine snag her ankle, thrusting her to the ground. Plant debris littered her long, black locks. Like a spring, she jumped up and dashed away to catch up to the group.
Lagging behind, Dr. Lance Monroe dragged himself through the underbrush. He forced his sweaty girth through the thorns, their razor edges slicing through his white shirt to draw blood. Gasping for breath, he grabbed hold of the nearest tree. Suddenly, sharpened claws seized his legs. Lance fell flat on his chest, knocking the breath from his lungs.
Hannah Roberts glanced behind and stopped. “Lance!” She ran back to help.
Monroe looked up at the young, blonde girl and threw out a hand in warning. “Don’t,” he choked. “Hurry to the others! They’ll—”A powerful wrench from the beast dragged him into the tall grass. Death soon muted his howls.
Hannah hurried, trembling to catch up with her friends. She leaped over a fallen tree, her boots barely clearing the black bark. She nearly tripped over a large rock, but her fear drove her forward. The others soon came into view.
In the clearing, the surviving seven scientists stood facing outwards. The foliage surrounding them shook as their pursuers finally revealed themselves.
A long, reptilian snout protruded from the thorny morass. A serpentine neck supported a large head with close-set, amber eyes. It growled. The scientists shuddered.
Like an artillery shell, a large chunk of tattered flesh flew from the bushes and exploded in a bloody mess beside Emmanuel. Severed arteries and veins spurted blood everywhere. Emmanuel turned trembling from the gruesome sight.
Something screeched. Another creature leaped from the high grass. Its one-ton bulk slammed Dr. Quincy Simmons to the ground. Nine-inch claws perforated his lungs. Blood drowned his cries into gurgles.
The Utahraptor’s strong jaws clamped around Simmons’ throat. The scientist’s head rolled away. Geysers of blood spurted from the severed arteries.
Another twenty-foot long raptor jumped forward and snatched up the head. The razor-sharp teeth split the skull to pieces, spilling brain matter from its mouth.
