Description

I LOVE the Psalms! They are reminders of God’s love that have comforted and inspired me throughout my life. My attempts to read through the entire book of Psalms were sometimes frustrated by my inability to relate to some of them. A few years ago, I felt led to find a way to personalize all 150 Psalms. As I began to share my reflections with others, I was encouraged to publish them, in the hopes that others too would be inspired. This book, “Psalms in the Key of my Life” covers Psalms 1-50.

I began this project as a journal. I would read each Psalm in a few different translations, then close my Bible (or computer), and pick up my pen, writing the message I got from that Psalm. Initially, I went in order. It didn’t take too long before I began skipping some because I just couldn’t relate to them. This book took about five years to finish, and some painful lessons that made the difficult ones easier to relate to. I have found that God gives me exactly what I need for whatever task he has set before me.

This book was no exception. I write from the perspective of an African-American woman who was a teacher in an urban public school district, but have had people from all races, ages, genders, and regions tell me they were able to relate to what I was saying, at least for several of the Psalms. Try a sample, hopefully, you will find something in my writing that speaks to you as well.

Book excerpt
No Worries
Psalm 27
The Lord is the light in my life
My protector
The strength that sustains me
Why am I ever afraid?
No matter what comes
I will be victorious
With God on my side
No need to fear evil
Or danger
Wars should not scare me
Not even street violence
He will keep me in a safe place
Where I will sing his praises
Teach me what you will have me do
Lead me down the right path
Protect me from troublemakers
I have seen,
And will ever see
The goodness of the Lord
While I live
Wait on the Lord
Be courageous
Have faith
He’s there
Just call his name
Your deliverance is on the way.
Raining down on you and me
Praise the Lord!
**************
Psalm 34
I will praise my God
No matter what happens.
My soul shall sing out even
When things look bleak.
Those around without hope or
Young in faith
Will learn and gain hope
By watching how
I handle the bad times.
Gather with me,
Let’s praise him together.
It brings Him great joy
To see His children
Gathered together
To sing his praises
I called on the Lord
And He heard me
He delivered me from my fears
And my despair
Others too who were anxious and fearful
Looked to Him and their hearts were lifted,
He even made them glad.
In the time of trouble I called on Him
And he helped me get through it
Successfully,
Joyfully.
God sends His angels to surround
Those who love and call upon him
He delivers us from all types of problems
Even those we are unaware of
If you haven’t tried him for yourself, please do.
You will find the experience far better
Than you imagined possible.
Listen children,
I will teach you how to live
If you want a good life, do the following:
Watch your tongue
Don’t speak evil
Be honest
Stay away from negativity
Pursue peace in every way
God keeps his eyes
On those who try to follow him
And listens for their cries.
He turns away from those who are evil
Making them insignificant,
But when his children cry,
He hears and delivers.
He nears when your heart is broken
And helps to lift your spirit
Christians do not live a life without difficulties
But are always aware that
God is near and will deliver.
He will keep you safe
In peace and in one piece.
Evil will be destroyed
But those who seek God will be saved.
