He was like her imaginary friend. “I tell him all my secrets, daddy.” she said to me. “He always helps me with my problems.”

“That’s wonderful dear.”

Every night I’d bend down at her bed and pray with her. “Thank God for the angel.” she’d remind me each time.

“Thank you, Lord, for Rebecca’s Guardian Angel.”

Every morning after, she’d tell me that the Angel said thanks. “He’s really from Heaven, daddy.”

“I know, that’s where all angels come from.”

Similar conversations carried on for about three months. She would get fruit snacks or candy bars, saying that the Angel was hungry. When I asked her why she had chocolate on her face, she told me that the Angel was nice and shared. I would laugh, pat her head, and send her off to bed.

“Come pray with me and the Angel, daddy!” Rebecca would call. So I did. We were preparing to go on a long drive to see my parents. My wife was sick and would need to stay home. “Pray that the Angel will stay with mommy and protect her too.” Rebecca asked me.

“Lord, please let Rebecca’s Angel stay and guard mommy.” I prayed.

The next day, we were on the road, listening to music. When we stopped for lunch, I called home to check on my wife. There was no answer. I left a message telling her we were about two hours away from my parents’ house.

“Mommy must be sleeping.” I told Rebecca, who had asked to speak with her.

“I wanted to ask her if she liked my Angel.”

“I’m sure she does, honey. He’s watching over her, remember?”

“Yeah, he said he would.”

When we reached my mother and father’s, I called again. Still no reply. I was slightly concerned, but if she wasn’t feeling well, she might still have been asleep. Perhaps her illness had gotten worse.

“Let’s pray for mommy.” I told Rebecca, hoping to calm myself down. “. . . And Mister Angel, please keep mommy safe.” I finished the prayer, just in case Rebecca was worried as well.

“My angel can’t hear you silly.” Rebecca said.

“Why not?” I asked. “He always hears me.”

“Yeah, that’s because he lives under my bed.”
“What do you mean?”

“My angel came through the window, and said he was from heaven. Now he lives under my bed.”

“Oh my God.” My mother covered her mouth. She ran to her phone and dialed 911.

I had to think rationally. “Honey, can you see the angel?”

“Of course! He wears clothes like you! He said it’s to hide his wings.”

“The police are on their way to the house.” My dad whispered in my ear.

“Don’t worry daddy, he said he was going to protect her. He promised. He even said he’d sleep under your bed tonight, just for mommy!”

My heart was frozen in my chest. I couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. I called home again, knowing no one would pick up the phone. The police would be there soon. I tried one more time.

“Hello?” Oh my God. It was my wife. Her voice was groggy and sore.

“Honey, get out of the house. Now. The police are almost there.”

“What, why?”

“Run out. Now.” I could hear the faint echo of sirens through the line. They were there. It would be okay.

“Okay I’m-” I heard the phone drop, and a scream.

“ANN! ANN! ARE YOU THERE? ANN!” My mother started crying, and my father took Rebecca out of the room.

I heard men yelling, telling someone to put their hands up. I heard gunshots.

In the days that passed, Rebecca was asked many questions. The first of which involved a picture of a man. They informed her of who he was, what he did. They asked if she knew him.

“You’re lying.” Rebecca sobbed. “Of course I know him! That’s my Guardian Angel!”

Author Website

https://www.facebook.com/guidrybooks

Best place to buy your book

Short Scares for Before Prayers

If you read what’s within these pages, I can guarantee you’ll be saying your prayers before bed.

‘Short Scares for Before Prayers’ showcases college student Michael T.
