He liked to help passersby—Mr. Patrol, and besides, it would be where they would find the finest homemade momma’s all-American apple-pie as close to heaven as stripping fresh bacon off a hogs’ ass at that time of day. Which would be lunch-hour: 12: 05pm. They had been waiting there on two steel stools since around that time—almost half an hour. Their behinds were definitely past numb—they would have been in Boston by now, Jon reminded, if their piece of crap (a yellow Subaru—Rita’s choice, he also added) car wouldn’t have up and decided to drop dead in the hub of Bangor.

But that’s exactly what it did, after refuelling at a small Texaco, of course.

“All right, you two love-birds!” hollered a short well-dressed man hurrying their way from down the hall of star-labelled dressing rooms. “It’s showtime!”

They eagerly hopped off their seats and the man directed them in front of a large stage-curtain.

“Okay, guys; look juicy! Edible!” The man winked. Jon and Rita glanced at each other, and the curtain quickly opened. Clapping erupted from a crowed they couldn’t see due to bright stage-lighting. The well suited man (now they guessed was the host) pointed them over to their podiums on the right side, and they realized they were not alone. A couple stood beside them and attended the other four podiums across the way.

“Welcome to You’ve Won!” their host greeted to a television camera slowly being wheeled closer to the stage as he stood up to a tall podium with the game-shows’ name bedazzled across it with shiny fake diamonds. “This is the show, for you people in the know. Let’s meet our lucky contestants, shall we?”

Mr. Game-show host turned to the other couples first on the left side. The first couple apparently newlyweds from the area, the other, married twenty-five years and the husband a self-professed jack of all trades with a beloved hobby of fixing up old sports cars . . . also from Bangor, Maine.

“I just love it, bro,” the man said. “I just love working on me sports ca’s, and—”

Mr. Host turned to them. “What about you two? C’mon; watcha do, where ya from, how’d ya end up here?”

Jon and Rita glanced at each other, before Jon nervously nodded for her to answer.

“Well,” Rita softly spoke into the microphone atop her podium. “We’re from out of town. We were actually heading to Boston for our one year anniversary; that’s where we met. But then, we were pulled over on the highway for a broken taillight and the officer said taking a trip through Bangor would cut our trip in half, but then our car stalled just a block from here and we were asked if we would like to be on a popular state wide game show, and I guess we just—”

Author Website

http://www.inthebookstand.com/

Best place to buy your book

http://www.inthebookstand.com/

“A.
