I am caught up in the silence,\u00a0you<\/span>r web, those promises, each one wicked. As I lay in silk with\u00a0you<\/span>, trembling, bare, cold, but warm from\u00a0you<\/span>r sweat and the heat in\u00a0you<\/span>r eyes, I think maybe this one time , I will reach\u00a0you<\/span>. Maybe this time\u00a0you<\/span>\u00a0won\u2019t hide.\u00a0You<\/span>\u00a0won\u2019t run. But somebody always leaves, don’t they? And what are we left with nothing but empty spaces.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Jaded, no rest, weary, still\u00a0you<\/span>\u00a0come crawling back, hanging round my door. Again, I am stripped down, floating under silk sheets, the full moon glaring like one massive eye outside my window, only this time, I\u2019m left shivering. There is too much silence here. Where are\u00a0you<\/span>? Where? I need to know.<\/p>\n

And, on this evening, a harrowing Sunday, I finally break, \u201c I need to quit,\u201d I whisper, as I stumble and drift in the dark, fishing for all the scattered pieces, the parts that might make me whole.<\/p>\n

Angela Carlton is a Georgia native. Her fiction has been published in EWR, Everyday Fiction, Pedestal Magazine, Long Story Short, High Noon, Third Iris, 50-wordstories, and Friday Flash Fiction. In addition, she won the reader\u2019s choice award with Pedestal Magazine in 2006. When she was a child, she wrote a book called, The Magic Fish and tucked it away in a box for safekeeping.
