Flies thrive on dirt and grime. Even so, they do attempt to clean themselves, brushing their heads and bodies. In the process, a fly can decapitate itself at times. Headless flies can then go on to live for several days \u2013 if it can be called living.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Look at that, Ed.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“What?”<\/span><\/p>\n

“That fly.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Where?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Frank pointed to the countertop between his plate of eggs-over and Ed’s own bowl of oatmeal. They were at the counter of AL’S DINER.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“There\u2026 That thing moving around.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Ed squinted. He had not seen his optometrist for several years.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Hey, that’s not a fly.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Of course it is, Ed.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s only half a fly.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Flies have a decentralized nervous system. That is why, even without their heads, they can walk around for several days, and even have sex.<\/span><\/p>\n

With his centralized nervous system, Ed couldn’t do that.<\/span><\/p>\n

No humans, of course \u2013 no vertebrates \u2013 could do that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, getting through an entire bowl of Al’s oatmeal was an accomplishment \u2013 and required more than an attached head.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Look at that thing moving around.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Without its head, the fly’s movement was fairly aimless.<\/span><\/p>\n

“You didn’t pull its head off, did you, Frank?”<\/span><\/p>\n

“No\u2026 What’d you take me for?”<\/span><\/p>\n

“I don’t know. I just was asking.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“When I see a fly, I’m going to do more than pull its head off.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“You don’t have to get upset with me. I was just asking.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Somehow, Ed didn’t feel like eating much more of his oatmeal.<\/span><\/p>\n

“How are the eggs, Frank?”<\/span><\/p>\n

“The way Al usually makes them.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“A little rubbery?”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Yeah.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Between them, the fly stumbled futilely.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I wonder where its head is?”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Did you check your oatmeal?”<\/span><\/p>\n

How about that. There was a fly in the oatmeal, as Ed, with his spoon, inspected the lumpy contents. But it’s head was attached.<\/span><\/p>\n
