“Horatio, look over there.”<\/p>\n

“Yes, Sir.”<\/p>\n

The Prince pointed with his finger.<\/p>\n

“No, Horatio. You’re not looking in the right spot.”<\/p>\n

The Prince pointed slightly more to the right.<\/p>\n

“Are those two bees, or not two bees?”<\/p>\n

“Bees?”<\/p>\n

“Yes. Two bees, or not two bees? That is the question.”<\/p>\n

The Prince was allergic to insects. Badly so.<\/p>\n

Horatio recalled the large, red lesion that blotted the royal nose the last time it was stung.<\/p>\n

“They could be flies.”<\/p>\n

“FLIES? I HATE FLIES.”<\/p>\n

It was true. Hamlet couldn’t stand flies.<\/p>\n

Even two bees would be preferable to two flies.<\/p>\n

“Do you want us to take arms against them, Sir?”<\/p>\n

“Arms?”<\/p>\n

“I mean, smash them with a bare bodkin?”<\/p>\n

In Denmark, at that time, the term ‘dagger’ was not in popular use.<\/p>\n

“A bodkin. Exactly.”<\/p>\n

The Prince could easily imagine squashed flies, with their bulbous heads flattened.<\/p>\n

“Actually, there seem to be three or four flies. At least four, Your Majesty.”<\/p>\n

Neither had good eyesight. Optometry was not yet a profession.<\/p>\n

And flies could care less if he were Prince of Denmark or a common grave digger.<\/p>\n

“Four, Horatio?”<\/p>\n

“There could be five.”<\/p>\n

“Something must be rotten in the state of Denmark.”<\/p>\n

Horatio didn’t want to mention it. But there was a bad smell in the castle.<\/p>\n

“It’s probably just herring, Horatio.”<\/p>\n

Of course. Herring. The Prince had figured it out. There were always flies around the herring barrels.<\/p>\n
