Skeleton

by Katie Booms

For years, it was a dinosaur
sitting in the big open room of our barn,
all sprawling shoulder and radials,
bold and gaunt, bare caverns and organs,
and we ignored it, except each winter
when a wagon had to be backed in to shelter,
or spring, when we remembered standing there,
shooting basketballs at the net nailed to the hay loft.
Then, it was impractically large, slow-moving,
bound for extinction.
