The Odd Couple

by Miasol Eguíbar

The old couple walk
unsheltered in the rain.
She is dressed all in black
save for a bright pink faux flower
in a buttonhole.
And she is smoking;
God knows how she manages
to keep the cigarette lit.
He wears a yellow checkered jacket
and matching trousers.
His scalp half-covered
by the most obvious toupee
not even the same colour of what
is left of his hair.
She says “roses will never bloom
in this weather”.
